Terms of employment
Intensive induction & briefing
At Headquarters you will meet your colleagues to receive relevant information and build a good relationship. War Child staff members conduct training on subjects such as the War Child Logical Framework and Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation system, while Security Training and Orientation on Stress Management are given by external providers. Depending on your profile, individual elements may be organised for you in addition to the briefing programme.
Long-term contracts
War Child values long-term relationships with people. After a first fixed-term contract of one year, you will be offered an indefinite contract. War Child tries to match assignments with staff in such a way that it serves both organizational goals and individual wishes.
Fair salary
War Child is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) and our wages are in line with those of other Dutch NGOs. In addition to your salary you will receive another eight per cent of the total as a holiday allowance. As an expat you will also receive a Monthly Subsistence Allowance to contribute to daily living costs (2007: 380 euros). War Child also refunds travel expenses to and from the programme area.
Good insurances
War Child provides travel insurance, healthcare insurance, disability insurance, vaccinations and medical examinations. Expatriates should be aware and will be informed about the limits of the insurances offered.
Pension
Dutch employees build up a non-contributory pension with War Child. An equivalent amount is paid out at the end of the contract to employees who are not Dutch and therefore ineligible for participation the pension scheme.
Work-life balance
War Child strives to allow you to balance your work and private life. In line with this, War Child expatriates can apply for an unpaid leave arrangement after two years of employment. Policies for Rest and Relaxation are in place in hardship areas and the Antares Foundation acts as our partner in supporting the psychosocial wellbeing of expatriates. War Child’s housing policy also aims to enable expatriates to live with family members where possible.
Proper and secure housing
War Child pays and organizes housing for expatriates. If security allows, you will have your separate private house. In some areas you may have to live in compounds or team houses for security reasons. If dependants (family members) live with you, War Child will provide travel, insurances and a Monthly Subsistence Allowance.
Holidays and Rest & Relaxation
Living and working in a former war zone is tough so it is important for you to get regular rest and have some time for yourself. Besides 26 days of holiday a year, you will also have a number of days, depending on the country, for rest and relaxation. During this time you will travel to a (nearby) safe city to recharge your batteries.
Professional support for well-being
During the briefing, War Child provides an Antares Foundation orientation course on Stress Management. The Antares Foundation is also our partner in offering psychological support during your time abroad. You will also be offered a consultation with one of their psychologists during your debriefing. In addition, you will have an annual medical check-up, besides the medical check-ups before departure and after returning from the field.
Decent debriefing
At the end of a contract or a long-term assignment you will return to headquarters to share your experiences. How did it go? What was difficult? Is there anything that needs to be changed? How do you see your future - and the future of War Child? This debriefing is very important for both you and the organization. We will also offer you a consultation with an independent, experienced psychologist and a medical check-up.
Appraisal and career prospects
War Child is a growing and professional organisation that values long-term relationships with its staff members. We pay structural attention to your performance and wishes and try to match assignments to staff in the right way at the right time.
During the course of the first year, your performance and working results are formally evaluated. We will create a personal development plan and you will be given the opportunity to give feedback to your supervisor and War Child as an organization.
