Objectives of the Sudan programme 2007
  1. Improved capacity of youth groups, community groups, CBOs, NGOs and relevant government authorities to support children’s protection and psychosocial development
  2. Increased awareness of children and youth’s psychosocial and protection needs amongst children, youth, communities and government authorities
  3. Increased safe environment for and by children, youth, communities, and government authorities through preventative child protection activities
  4. Increased quality of and access to education for children and youth
  5. Increased life skills and livelihood opportunities for children, youth and their caregivers
In 2007 War Child reached 31,657 children, young people and adults in Sudan.

Methods of work were among others: protection projects through strengthening local community groups and developing child protection committees in eight communities. Violence is reduced in the family and community, adults, youngsters and children are aware of the importance of respectful relationship between them. Safe places are created for children to play, information is provided on protecting children. Harsh corporal punishment in schools and at home is addressed by school officials and parents, families are looking after children better and education possibilities for children are improved.

A high community profile in Juba and Yei was achieved by our leadership role in the celebration of African Child Day which was used to advocate for the Child Bill which incorporates the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. A review of the progress on these recommendations will be conducted in August 2008 in order to establish future strategies. Good progress was made in 2007 and it would be difficult to justify War Child not helping children in Sudan. However, it is important to be realistic about the difficulties and limitations.
