In DR Congo, War Child focuses on improving the psychosocial wellbeing and access to education of vulnerable and marginalised children and youth in the city of Bukavu (South Kivu province) and within two rural communities outside of Bukavu.
War Child supports local partner organisations as well as schools. They work with different groups of vulnerable children, including ex-child soldiers, orphans, street children, children accused of witchcraft, victims of sexual violence and children who have been incarcerated. With the support of War Child, the organisations and schools are in a better position to offer improved education and adequate psychosocial support.

Training
War Child trains the employees of these local NGOs and schools so that they can offer adequate schooling and psychosocial support to the children with whom they work. The training covers the child-centred teaching methodology, catch-up education curriculum, child rights, child development, positive communication with children, conflict resolution, family reunification and the specific problems of former child soldiers and victims of sexual violence. War Child also trains the employees in organising creative workshops and ‘fun days’ for children. Finally War Child trains staff of other organisations and teachers of other schools upon request.

Material support
Furthermore War Child offers the partner organisations and schools financial and material support. They submit proposals for micro projects, such as the setting up of a library, the production of a radio programme for youth or the purchasing of equipment for vocational training, as well as material for creative and recreational activities.

Awareness raising
Furthermore, War Child works with the partners to organise sensitization sessions in the neighbourhoods where they are situated. The aim is to raise the awareness on the rights and psychosocial needs of children and to promote positive attitudes towards marginalised children.

War Child also assists children who have been incarcerated. Children in the central prison of Bukavu take part in creative workshops and have access to a psychologist for counselling. Read more
