Act Now to Free Children from Violence and Trauma

War Child will launch a national petition to mark the International Day against the Use of Child Soldiers on February 12. There are 250 million children living in conflict-affected areas worldwide. One out of every ten soldiers is a child soldier - and children are increasingly being used as instruments of war in armed conflicts. We believe this has to stop…

A global increase

In the past 15 years, the number of child soldiers has increased. Children are recruited as soldiers, domestic workers and sex slaves. They are easily manipulated - which makes them particularly vulnerable for recruitment into armed groups. Technology has also made it easier to use firearms - another factor for the increase in the number of child soldiers across the world.

No choice

Children are deliberately targeted by armed forces. They are used as human shields and forced to live with fear. “I wanted to escape but did not dare to do so because of the fear of being killed,” says former child soldier Dennis. Many child soldiers are forced to execute people or become suicide bombers.

Make it stop

Children affected by armed conflict need more than food and shelter. The effect that war has on these children can be devastating. In order to help them process the traumatizing events they have witnessed, War Child works to provide psychosocial support to these children.

Keep children out of war

War Child is asking the Dutch public to sign a petition. When we collect 40,000 signatures, we will become a topic on the agenda of the Dutch government. We want to convince the government to incorporate psychosocial support into all emergency humanitarian interventions.

This is because no child should be part of war. Ever. If you are from the Netherlands and want to add your name to the petition, you can sign it here
