CORE for Teachers

Teaching is a demanding job - particularly for the thousands of practitioners around the world who defend children’s right to learn against a backdrop of war and violence. That's why War Child is developing a programme in support of teaching staff who work in these challenging contexts - the CORE for Teachers intervention.

In areas affected by armed conflict - where resources are scarce and the threat of violence is ever-present - the role of teachers is particularly significant.

Intervention designed to address the pressures of teachers

The presence of effective teachers makes a significant and proven contribution to children’s social and emotional learning abilities - serving to boost children’s overall wellbeing and learning outcomes. In areas affected by armed conflict - where resources are scarce and the threat of violence is ever-present - the role of teachers is particularly significant.

Yet teachers living in areas affected by armed conflict face significant pressures themselves - pressures that can exert a negative impact on both their wellbeing and classroom skills. The Core for Teachers intervention has been designed to address these pressures - particularly in areas where there are shortages of teachers.

How the intervention works

Core for Teachers focuses on expanding professional development opportunities for teachers within our countries of operation. The intervention is designed to increase teacher capacity in three key areas: improved social and emotional competencies; improved psychosocial wellbeing; and enhanced classroom management skills.

In a high-stress environment - marked by threats and uncomfortable events - teachers can feel stress and anxiety. That’s why the intervention will also see individual teachers receive one-on-one support in the form of intensive and ongoing coaching.

All of this will serve to ultimately contribute towards creating a safe and stimulating learning environment for children forced to grow up in the midst of armed conflict.
